The Gift 19 Mar 2007
I served with Elder Jarmon in Midland toward the end of my time in Michigan. One of the people we were teaching was a single lady who lived in somewhat of a halfway house. Our first meeting with her was very spiritual and uplifting. One of the topics dealt with her life, which was a difficult one to say the least. We taught the 1st discussion and invited her to read the Book of Mormon and attend Church, to which she agreed. We said a closing prayer and she told us to hold on just a moment. She then handed my companion $10, which was probably all the money she had in the world, and told us that a minister had given her $10 a long time ago as she hitch-hiked from Texas to Michigan. She wanted to repay that debt. As strongly as we explained it was not necessary, she was just as adamant that it was. We took this money from her and departed. We struggled with what to do until the Spirit spoke (of course!) and told us what to do. We called the office and had a Missionary edition of the Bible sent to us at the next Zone Conference. She did not own a Bible and it just so happened they cost $10. A couple of days later, we went back to her home and knocked on the door. She wouldn't answer even though we knew she was home because her TV was on and we could hear her walking. We announced who we were through the door and knocked again. After about 5 minutes of this, she flung open the door and I thought she was going to beat us up. We gave her the Bible and told her the Lord had instructed us to deliver this. She wept with gratitude and we tried to let her know that she was loved and known by the Lord and He had not forsaken her. We were both transferred a few days later, so I never got to know the result of our effort. But I will never forget the joy that came to her life by our simple testimonies and the gift.
